Theologian · Modern

St. John Henry Newman

1801–1890 · Development of doctrine; Oratorian

Saint Latin

Canonized 2019; declared a Doctor of the Church in 2025.

Leader of the Oxford Movement, received into the Church in 1845 after writing the “Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine,” later Oratorian and cardinal. His “Grammar of Assent” explored how real assent to religious truth is reached through the convergence of probabilities under the illative sense, and his Apologia defended his integrity against Kingsley.

Why he matters: The most important English-speaking Catholic theologian of modern times: his accounts of development, conscience and the laity shaped Vatican II, and his conversion opened a path thousands have followed.
