Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre

1905–1991 · Traditionalist Catholicism (SSPX)

Catholic · censured Latin Thomism · Strict-observance and manualist Thomism

Archbishop; Superior General of the Holy Ghost Fathers; founded the Society of St. Pius X (1970); suspended a divinis (1976); excommunicated latae sententiae for consecrating four bishops without mandate (Ecclesia Dei Adflicta, 1988); died unreconciled. The four bishops' excommunications were remitted in 2009; the Society has no canonical status.

A missionary bishop in French Africa and a leader of the conservative minority at Vatican II, he refused the Council's teaching on religious liberty, ecumenism and collegiality, rejected the Mass of Paul VI as a Protestantised rite, and founded a society of priests to preserve “the Mass of all time.” His 1974 Declaration adheres “to Eternal Rome” against “the Rome of neo-Modernist tendency,” and his 1988 consecrations gave the movement a future without Rome.

Why he matters: The founder of organized traditionalism and the source of the “recognize and resist” position: the pope is pope, but his acts are to be measured against Tradition as the Society reads it. Anyone drawn to the older liturgy meets his arguments, and anyone who wants to answer them must read him.

Where to be careful

The Church judged the 1988 consecrations a schismatic act and his notion of Tradition “incomplete and contradictory” (Ecclesia Dei Adflicta 4); Benedict XVI (2009) and Francis (2021) reaffirm that the Council and the reformed rite are the Church's own. His love of the Mass and of the missions is real; his refusal of a valid council is the error to know and avoid.

School of Thomism · Strict-observance and manualist Thomism

The Thomism of the twentieth-century seminaries, Garrigou-Lagrange its monument: the Twenty-Four Theses, deductive certainty, the manual's thesis-objection-reply. Pieper's complaint was that this “Thomism” lost Thomas's negative theology and sense of mystery; its defenders reply that without it Thomas dissolves into history. Both the sedevacantist and the SSPX worlds live here, usually without Garrigou's own obedience to the living Magisterium.
