A priest and professor of Catholic Weltanschauung at Berlin and Munich, whose “Spirit of the Liturgy” (1918) taught that liturgy is play before God and not a means to an end, whose “The Lord” is a classic meditation on Christ, and whose “The End of the Modern World” and “Letters from Lake Como” diagnosed the loss of the natural and the rise of technological power. His thought on “opposition” (Gegensatz) sought polarity rather than system.
Why he matters: Teacher of the liturgical movement and of Benedict XVI, who took the title of his first book; Pope Francis wrote his doctorate on him. His cultural diagnosis of modernity remains unsurpassed in Catholic letters.
