Jean Daniélou, SJ

Jesuit patrologist; co-founder of Sources Chrétiennes; peritus at Vatican II; cardinal 1969; member of the Académie française.

A Jesuit patrologist and friend of de Lubac whose 1946 article “Les orientations présentes de la pensée religieuse” was the manifesto of the nouvelle théologie, and whose “The Bible and the Liturgy,” “From Shadows to Reality” and studies of Origen and Gregory of Nyssa recovered the typological reading of Scripture. After the Council he became an outspoken defender of the Church's doctrine and of the religious life against secularization.

Why he matters: Reconnected Catholic theology to the Greek Fathers and the sacramental reading of Scripture, and showed that ressourcement and fidelity to the Magisterium were one; his “Prayer as a Political Problem” is a classic on faith in a secular society.
